WATCH THIS — The Big Wash (1948)

Goofy plays a circus worker in this animated short film, which ran in theaters during 1948, just seven years after Dumbo. He tries his best to bathe a circus elephant named Dolores, but she’s having none of it. This was the second of Dolores the Elephant’s appearances in Disney’s cartoon canon. She’s also seen in Tiger Trouble (1945) and Working for Peanuts (1953).

At just over seven minutes, The Big Wash provides plenty of the character humor and sight gags that made Disney cartoons reliable box office diversions. We experience the same kind of fun in our short jaunt aboard The Barnstormer. Seeing Goofy in circus garb makes this one feel like a natural lead-in to Storybook Circus.

In fact, the cartoon just might have inspired The Barnstormer itself. As guests walk through the queue, they pass by a crashed rocket with the name Dolores painted on its side. The same can be seen in one of the posters on display there. While no explanation is given for the name, one might easily conclude that it’s the Imagineers’ subtle nod to Dolores the Elephant’s circus role in The Big Wash.
